Vet Assistant

Shelter Medicine CVT or experienced Vet Asst –

Summary:

Provides high level of care to canines in conjunction with the Medical Directors’ direction for animals in the rescue requiring medical treatment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Ensures all animals receive the appropriate medication.

  • Works with staff including Directors, Coordinators, and Foster Families in developing and adhering to current treatment, vaccination, and medical treatment protocols. Assists as required with treatments and medication orders.

  • Administers treatments per the Medical Directors orders and provides excellent supportive care for injured and ill animals.

  • Provides direction for the staff regarding canines undergoing treatment.

  • Maintains medical treatment records and reports in an accurate and timely manner and in accordance with Colorado Puppy Rescue procedures.

  • Sends treatment records and reports to Executive and Medical Director

  • Communicates with rescue staff, foster families, and adopters concerning the health of canines undergoing treatment.

  • Answers general questions about Colorado Puppy Rescue procedures and care of canines.

  • Communicates daily with the rescue medical director regarding the status of canines in treatment.

  • Brings concerns forward and triages priorities throughout the intake and adoption events by working with rescue staff.

  • Communicates with the rescue staff regarding the health status of animals available for adoption.

  • Reviews sick canines examining and medicating as needed following medical protocols and moving animals to appropriate isolation areas in home and at intake and adoption location as indicated.

  • Preforms laboratory testing as needed, including fecal tests

  • Giving vaccinations, wormers, etc. as needed

  • Brings canine to specialty veterinarian as needed

  • Cleans and disinfects kennels and health care areas as needed to ensure they are maintained in a sanitary and organized manner.

  • Attaches all medical related information to adoption contract as needed

  • Performs other medically related duties as assigned.

  • In home care of canines needing medical attention as needed

Requirements:

  • Must be at least 18 years of age.

  • Associates degree in veterinary technology from an accredited institution.

  • Successful completion of a veterinary technician internship and a minimum of one year of prior experience in a full-service veterinary hospital or animal shelter/rescue environment.

  • Must be willing to bring sick and/or injured canines’ home for treatment

  • Must be able to work flexible hours, which will include evenings, weekends, and holidays.

 

Physical Demands:

  • Must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
